1066 Gymnastics was established in 2008


October 2008
In 2008 club founder Matthew Hart appeared at Sussex Championships with a handful of gymnasts in a striking purple and silver uniform. This was the first appearance of 1066 Gymnastics as a club. To view photos from the club's first competition please click here Over the coming months the small club gradually grew while a warehouse in Bexhill-on-Sea was converted into a state-of-the-art gymnastics training centre. This would become the home of 1066 Gymnastics once completed.

Late 2008 / Early 2009
During the construction phase of the gym, coaches Matthew Hart and Clare Clarke made use of the tumble track at Helenswood School with several bookings each week. They also made two hour round trips to Gillingham, Tolworth and Hawth (Crawley) Gymnastics Clubs who were very kind in lending their time and facilities. As March 2009 approached the club started a local promotional campaign. A waiting list and anticipation of the new facilities began to grow. March 2009
The club took on new staff and made final preparations for the club opening to the public. At the end of March the club held it's first training session in the new gym which was a wonderful day of celebration for gymnasts, coaches and families. April 2009
On the first of the month classes began. Word soon spread of a brand new gymnastics facility offering a range of classes and membership began to soar.

July 2009
On Saturday 11 July 2009 the club was visited by Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle. A european and world champion, Beth was on hand to chat with the gymnasts, speak with local media and officially open the facilities. To read more about Beth's visit to the club please click here.

October 2009
The club returned to the Sussex Gymnastics Championships and celebrated our first anniversary with a series of strong performances. Each year the club enjoys taking many squad gymnasts to this multi-discipline event and celebrating another anniversary. December 2009
The club brought its first year to a close with the first annual 1066 Gymnastics Awards Evening. The success of the first year was celebrated along with the impressive achievements of the gymnasts. May 2010
The club celebrated an important milestone when the 1066 Troopers won the Level 2 Men's category at the 2010 Team Gym British Championships. They were honoured with a victory party alongside other national finalists that month from Men's Artistic and Tumbling events. July 2011
1066 Gymnastics received a lot of interest and national attention when we became the first club in the country to include a facility dedicated to Freestyle Gymnastics.
