The club enjoyed a truly special official opening on 11 July 2009 when British Gymnastics icon and two-time Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle spent the day with us.
Beth was welcomed into the gym by Head Coach Matthew Hart and the day began with a private training session overseen by Beth for squad gymnasts as well as competition winners from local schools. The gymnasts were then treated to a question and answer session where they got to put their questions to one of the world's best gymnasts.
After a short break members of the public were invited in to fill the gym and viewing gallery for the second part of the day. Beth was interviewed over a microphone for all the guests and spoke of her delight at opening the gym. "It's great to see a gym like this. It is fantastic and has amazing facilities", she said. "This new gym is a great inspiration for kids and I'm sure there are many stars here today." Beth also presented an award to the club to be included at the annual end of year club awards. The Beth Tweddle award was introduced as a reward for each year's most determined gymnast.
Beth and the audience were then treated to a series of peformances and displays from the club's gymnasts across a range of disciplines, making the day truly one of celebration. To bring the day to a close Beth spent time taking photos and signing autographs for everybody before saying her goodbyes
We also welcomed the BBC and ITV into the gym during the day who reported
Beth's visit. You can view the ITV coverage in the video on the right. Our thanks go to Beth Tweddle for providing such a supportive and inspirational
visit for everybody at the club.
